The 2023 grant portal is now closed.
Grants from the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation are awarded to organizations with tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) status, or to individuals or organizations with fiscal sponsors. First-time applicants, or previous grantees proposing new projects, are required to submit brief letters of inquiry describing the program for which you are requesting funding. LOI may be sent to Jaclyn Miller at jaclyn.miller@leonianfoundation.org.
Applicants may submit one application per grant cycle.
The Foundation uses Submittable.com as the submission platform. You must create a login account to apply for funding.
The Foundation funds programs or projects related to the following photography-based subjects:

The Foundation funds programs or projects related to the following photography-based subjects:
- Education–Beginner or intermediate photography education classes that benefit either K-12 students or adults; Exhibition requests for education programs may also be found in this category
- Professional Development–Mentorships; Workshops for photographers; Training Programs; Artist Residencies; Internships; Fellowships
- Archiving / Cataloging–Archiving, key wording, cataloging, or otherwise preserving photographic collections
- Exhibitions–Solo or group shows of emerging and/or established photographers held in organizations with an operating budget of less than $2,000,000
- Community Photography Projects–Community-centered projects with a concentration on documentary photography; Projects with a strong component of community outreach. This is not the same as an Education Program.
All applicants will need to include in their online submission:
- IRS determination letter indicating 501(c)(3) status (of Fiscal Sponsor, if applicable)
- One sentence summarizing the project or program
- Mission statement
- Details on the organization and its history
- Board of trustees with affiliations
- Project details
- Project budget. Must include:
- Requested Leonian funds clearly defined
- List of other committed and potential funders
- Current operating budget (of Fiscal Sponsor, if applicable)
- Actual budget from most recently completed fiscal year (of Fiscal Sponsor, if applicable)
- Résumé of project director (1-2 pages, max)
- Photographic images, press articles, or other representative publications
